The Effect of Kangaroo Mother Care with Weight Gain in Low Birth Weight Infant in Kediri, East Java, Indonesia

Abstract

Infant Mortality Rate is one indicator to see the health status. Until now, IMR in Indonesia is still ranked high compared to another ASEAN countries. The main causes of IMR are  perinatal disorder 34,7%, low birth weight infant 30,3%, and asphyxia 27%. This sudy aimed to determine the effect of Kangaroo Mother Care with weight gain in low birth weight infant.

This study was a quasy experimental group, pre and post test control design . It was conducted in General Hospital of Kediri Regency and some privat hospitals in Kediri Regency, East Java on May 01st to July 01st, 2017. The population was all low birth weight infants. The sample size was 62, taken by accidental sampling. The weight gain was measured by a scale. The independent variable was kangaroo mother care, while the dependent variable was weight gain in low birth weight infant. The data was analyzed using Odd Ratio and Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test.

Kangaroo Mother Care were 2.60 times as many to weight gain than infants who did not get Kangaroo Mother Care. Giving Kangaroo Mother Care to the group experiment gain the weight of low birth weight infant with the difference in mean value of weight gain of 450 grams at third day and based on Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test results shows significance with p value 0.000 < α 0.05 (OR = 2.60 ; p = 0.000). Kangaroo Mother Care increases weight gain in low birth weight infant.
